Auto Insurance Nevada NV
Reader’s Question:
Will my insurance policy cover my vehicle if someone else drives it? I live in Nevada.
Jim
Las Vegas, NV
Normally, if you have a standard liability insurance policy your Bodily injury (BI) and Property damage (PD) extend to an individual that you let use your vehicle with your permission or consent. However these types of coverages do not cover your vehicle for damages it sustains in accidents, it covers others the property damages and injuries that your car caused.
To cover your own car you would need “full coverages” of comprehensive and collision on your vehicle. These physical damages coverages protect your vehicle when in a collision or comprehensive situation.
Generally, these coverages should cover your car if you give consent to someone else to operate it but insurance policy terms can vary so you would have to read through your policy and talk with your agent to make sure that collision, comprehensive and your liability coverages would all extend to those that you give consent to drive your car.
Driving Without Auto Insurance In Nevada
Reader’s Question:
If you let someone drive your vehicle in the state of Nevada and they don’t have car insurance and they get into an accident, who is will be responsible, the owner or the driver?
Ben
Las Vegas, NV
First if you have insurance on your car it would be primary no matter if the other person who drive your vehicle had insurance or not. If the driver did have their own policy then their insurance would be used as secondary or excess insurance for damages he or she caused.
Now if you let someone to use your vehicle that is uninsured, which you should not because this is illegal, and they cause an accident, then normally both the driver who caused the accident and the owner of the car can be held liable for the damages.
As the owner of the car you have vicarious liability for those who you permit to operate it. Additionally, if you know the vehicle is uninsured you should not allow it on the roadways. Even if the driver had their own insurance on their own car it would likely not cover an accident in your car as primary insurance.
Auto Insurance SR22 Nevada

Billy
Las Vegas, NV
Proof of insurance through an SR-22 certificate can be required for different amounts of time depending upon the reason that you are mandated to get this financial responsibility form in Nevada.
If you are required to acquire an SR-22 certificate due to being in an accident while diving a car that did not have auto insurance, the Nevada Department of Vehicles lists that you must maintain that SR-22 coverage for three years.
The Nevada DMV goes on to state that there is no statute of limitation nor time limit on SR-22 insurance requirements. The NV DMV does not notify motorists when the period of required coverage is over, to know when your SR-22 coverage can be ended, you may contact the Nevada DMV directly to know for sure.
