Reader’s Question:

I have a Michigan drivers license and I am planning to move and purchase a vehicle in Carson City, Nevada. I am going to register and insure a vehicle in Nevada. Can I do that using my Michigan license?

Benny

Carson City, NV

Yes, you can buy and get insurance for the vehicle in Carson City, Nevada with your Michigan license but if you are planning to reside in Carson City, Nevada for good and plan on living there as a resident then you will be required to get a Nevada drivers license.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicle notes that for new residents of Nevada they need to get NV drivers license within thirty days and you would need to get car registration on the vehicle within sixty days if you brought the vehicle with your in Nevada. Failure to register the car in the state of Nevada will be required to pay the fine of $250 up to $500.

You must get automobile insurance for a car registered in NV from an insurance carrier licensed to do business in Nevada. In the state of Nevada, the minimum liability insurance is $15,000/$30,000/$10,000.
